William Jacob Smith, 61, formerly of Sandusky, peacefully transitioned on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland after a brief illness.

Jake, as he was affectionately known, was born in Sandusky on May 26, 1959 to Harold D. Smith and Naomi (Smith) Mickens. He was raised on the "South Side SS4L" of Sandusky and built lifelong friendships. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Curtis Brown. Jake later moved to Cleveland and was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, under the leadership of Rev. Hobson Sadler.

Mr. Clifford Schirg gave Jake his first job, at the age of 11, at Cliff’s store on Hayes Ave. and continued working at Cliff’s Carryout during and after high school. Jake was humorous, had an outgoing personality, and was well known to young and old throughout the community.

Jake graduated from Sandusky High School, class of 1978. He enlisted in the Navy in 1982 and was honorably discharged in 1986. Jake had a generous spirit, great cooking skills, and loved to cook for family and friends. In the Navy, he honed his culinary skills as a chef. He continued his career as a chef at the Ohio Veterans Home, Ryan’s Buffet (after he left, the chicken was never the same), Olive Garden, MacGarveys, and Kalahari. Jake's dream of opening a restaurant was realized when he owned and operated Artino’s Italian American Cuisine in Sandusky for several years. After moving to Cleveland, Jake devoted his time to volunteer work for his church and Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries.

Jake leaves to cherish his memory, brother, Harold Dee Smith; sisters, Betty Simmons, Irma Smith, Naomi Tyler, Jackie Smith, and Frances Copeland (Eli); six half brothers and sisters; his brother for life, John Tye; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marianne Goodwin; and brothers, Nathanial “Nate” Smith and Ezell Smith.

Friends may call on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 10 a.m. until the homegoing service at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1215 Pierce St., Sandusky. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be made to the family online by visiting
